Service Description: The Secured Areas dataset shows public and private lands that are permanently secured against conversion to development through fee ownership, easements, or conservation focused designations (GAP 1-3). GAP status is a classification developed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, to reflect the intent of the landowner or easement holder. GAP 1 and 2 are commonly thought of as “protected” for nature and natural processes, while GAP 3 are “multiple-use” lands.
The Secured Areas dataset is a TNC product created primarily for estimating current extent and status of secured lands with a conservation focus, GAP 1-3. It also includes a set of more temporary easement and GAP 4 open space lands not permanently secured for conservation. These non-GAP1-3 lands are less comprehensively mapped given the lack of their inclusion in some primary source datasets, but they are included as available in our source datasets.
TNC compiled these data from state, federal, and private sources and assigned a GAP Status and other standard attribute fields to the best of our ability. It represents our best compilation of existing protected areas across the lower 48 U.S. states. Any updates, corrections, or discrepancies with respect to official versions of source federal, state, or local protected areas databases should be viewed as provisional until such time as such changes have been reviewed and accepted by the official data stewards for those other protected areas databases.

Comments: The basemap layer contains property information from The Nature Conservancy’s 2015 Secured Lands (public version) dataset and includes the following types of lands within a 10 kilometer shoreline buffer of the northeastern United States: Nature Reserves, Preserves and Sanctuaries, National Wildlife Refuges, Wildlife Managed Areas, Municipal Forests, Lands and Parks and State Forests, Lands and Parks. The secured lands dataset shows public lands, private lands and waters secured by a conservation situation that includes an explicit level of security from future conversion and current incompatible uses. The Nature Conservancy’s secured land dataset strives to include all permanently protected lands in the eastern 18 U.S. states and is compiled annually from over sixty sources. This dataset displays a subset of secured lands from the larger dataset provided by The Nature Conservancy’s Eastern Division. For the most part, it is a combination of public land information maintained by each state, and private conservation land information compiled by the Nature Conservancy’s state field offices. The complete version of the secured lands dataset can be found at http://nature.ly/securedareas along with a detailed report, and additional information. Please see attached metadata for more information. Please be advised that not all sites found in The Nature Conservancy’s secured lands dataset and the dataset provided on the Northeast Ocean Data Portal are publically accessible.
